There are 2 things I love about the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III’s speech:

  1. It makes me tired and sad to hear folks say stuff like “you can love the person without approving of their lifestyle.”  Being gay is part of my LIFE like being black or being an artist or being woman.  Neither approval or disapproval will change it.  Rev. Moss doesn’t try to make the “love the sinner” argument.  He seems to understand that being gay is not an immoral act, like murder or theft.  Being gay, like being straight, is part of someone’s identity.  You can’t approve of it.  You can’t disapprove of it.  It just is.
  2. Rev. Moss understands that the real American dream is living free in a pluralistic society.  This means that we must do the work to love each other across all of our differences.  I recently saw the documentary Lord Save Us From Your Followers.  Please see this film.  It made me understand that the opposite of Compassion is Narrow Mindedness.  It will only be when we all reach out beyond our zones of comfort that we will be able to practice true compassion.
